Dementia and Dealing
with Challenging Behaviours
Dementia is very common
in older people, which makes looking after
residents increasingly difficult. This course
discusses the different types of dementia,
including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular
dementias, Huntington’s Chorea, Lewy
Body dementia, CJD, Acute Confusional states
and looks at how to distinguish between them.
The causes and prevention of Acute Confusional
State is covered as well as the management.
The signs and symptoms of dementia are investigated
together with the stages of dementia and the
treatment. Challenging behaviour is a situation
most carers have to deal with at some time
and this section of the course equips the
carer with the knowledge of what triggers
challenging behaviours and how to deal with
the situations.

Medication
Management
Carers are now often in the position of administering
medicines, this course is an introduction
to medicines, covering the legal categories
of medicines, different types of administration,
the complete process of medicines management
from ordering, receiving, administering and
disposing of medicines. Controlled medicine
regulations are covered. Certain groups of
medicines are used more frequently in care
homes and these are looked at in more detail,
including medicines used for heart problems,
warfarin, painkillers, laxatives, and antidepressants.

Advanced
Medicines Management
This is a follow on course of Medication Management,
covering medication policies, audit trails
and monitored dosage systems. Drug formulation,
bioavailability, crushing and problems with
compliance are discussed. Other topics included
are nasogastric and P.E.G feeds; repeat dispensing
drug monitoring and drug interactions. Drug
groups discusses are medicines used to treat
hypertension, pain relief, constipation, anxiety
and sleep disorders.
The content of the course is in line with
Csci recommendations.
This course is suitable for senior
carers and managers.
Medicines
Management for children and young adults
This course is the same ‘ Medicines
Management’ but discusses different
medicines and conditions related to care of
children. This course covers basic knowledge
and the treatment of: epilepsy, depression,
pain relief, enuresis, diabetes, asthma, attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and
Autism.

Care
of the Dying
The subject of dealing with death can often
be a difficult one, this course aims at understanding
the facts of dying, meeting the needs of the
dying resident, identifying the signs and
symptoms of death together with the five stages
of dying. The cultural and religious differences
are discussed, looking at the different rituals
that need to be observed during the final
hours and after death. Once the resident has
died the family left behind need support and
comfort and often the carer is their first
port of contact, the course covers caring
for the bereaved family as well as carer support.

Diabetes
Diabetes is on the increase in the Western
world and therefore carers will become more
and more involved with diabetic patients.
This course helps you understand the different
types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2, the
possible causes of diabetes and the signs
and symptoms that need to be identified to
allow diagnosis of diabetes. Diet is discussed
as well as the other treatment options, including
medication and insulin. Monitoring of blood
sugar is essential and the different methods
are discussed. Good control of blood sugar,
blood pressure and cholesterol levels have
been shown to reduce long-term complications
in diabetes. Long term complications of diabetes
are discussed and how they may be prevented.

Challenging
Behaviours
This is a more in-depth course looking at
the different types and causes of challenging
behaviours and how to deal with them using
the system of REFLECT, RELATE and REVIEW.
Issues of communication and feedback to the
resident are discussed, as are the potential
indicators of challenging behaviours. Strategies
for dealing with verbal abuse are looked at
as well as calming down therapies and reviewing
incidents.

Parkinson’s
Disease and Multiple Sclerosis
Many residents suffer from Parkinson’s
disease. It can be very debilitating and frustrating.
This course looks at the causes of Parkinson’s
disease, the signs, symptoms and stages of
the disease. The different medications available
are discussed, as are the side effects. Living
with Parkinson’s disease can be difficult
so, included in this course, is coping with
daily activities such as mobility, eating,
speech and communication. Multiple Sclerosis
is a severe progressive disease and this course
aims to cover causes, signs, symptoms and
management of the disease.

First
Aid Awareness
This course aims to increase the confidence
in giving first aid and includes, fainting,
shock, bleeding, seizures, falls and fractures,
choking, cardiac arrest and burns and scalds.
The course also includes what should be contained
in a first aid box, the importance of safety
of self and casualty, importance of communication
and actions.

Mental
Health
This course covers a broad view of mental
illness including, depression, dementia and
confusional states, risk assessment, paraphrenia
and anxiety related disorders. Each illness
is looked at in detail, discussing causes,
symptoms and treatments. Risk assessment looks
at different sorts of risk and how they should
be managed, also included is assessing suicide
risk and suicide prevention.

Elder
Abuse
This course examines what constitutes abuse,
how to prevent it, looking at risk factors
and preserving the evidence. There are six
main areas of abuse that the course covers
including, physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial
abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and institutional
abuse. Each area of abuse is discussed followed
by looking at possible indicators. Abuse of
staff is covered as well as abuse from outside
the home.

Dementia
Care
This course starts by looking at the neuropathology
of Alzheimer’s disease, the stages and
the clinical presentation of Alzheimer’s.
Vascular Dementias are explored including
multi-infarct dementia. Other dementias discussed
include Lewy body, CJD and Korsakoffs Psychosis.
Treatment options including different types
of medication is included. Nutritional requirements
of this group of people are discussed as well
as recommendations for feeding and including
meals as a therapeutic activity. Communication
is covered including, non-verbal communication.
Continence is discussed looking at the reasons
for incontinence and possible at solutions.
Activity and play are considered in terms
of, how can these be integrated into the daily
regime in the home.

Introduction
to Learning Disabilities
Learning disability describes a group of people
with significant developmental delay, arrested
or incomplete achievement. The causes of learning
disability are explored looking at chromosome
abnormalities, gene abnormalities, environmental
causes, infections, perinatal and postnatal
causes. Downs syndrome, Edwards’s syndrome,
Cri du chat syndrome and pradi-willi are all
discussed, as are the behavioural difficulties
and what to do about undesired behaviours.
Communication is included investigating useful
tools for communication.

Anxiety
and Depression in Older Adults
Depression reduces quality of life and is
often under diagnosed. This course covers
anxiety disorders, including agrophobia, panic
and generalised anxiety disorders. The symptoms
and treatments are discussed as well as the
causes. The common features of depression
are covered, as are causative factors and
treatments and management of depression. Communication
is a vital factor in managing depressed residents
and this course deals with the different types
of communication.

Cardiac
Disease
This course looks at the different types of
cardiac disease, including angina, hypertension,
heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias. It looks
at the symptoms and diagnostic parameters
and then discusses treatment and lifestyle
changes.

Oncology
This course investigates some of the common
cancers, and the main treatment options. It
also discusses the symptoms associated with
advanced cancers including pain, anorexia,
weakness, dyspnoea, nausea and vomiting and
anxiety. It also briefly covers some of the
new advances in cancer treatment.

Wound
Care
This course covers the aetiology and causes
of pressure sores, factors that exacerbates
pressure sores and risk assessment. It also
goes into pressure sore prevention and the
assessment of wounds. The healing process
is discussed and the products available are
covered. Different types of wounds and dressings
are discussed.

Asthma
This course discusses the aetiology of asthma
and the triggers factors of asthma. It also
goes into other respiratory problems including
bronchitis, emphysema and bronchiectasis.
Symptoms of asthma as well as the management
and treatment of asthma is covered, ending
with a practical session on all the inhaler
devices available.

Counselling Skills
Counselling is an everyday part of the carers
role and this course introduces the carer
to some of the basic rules in counselling:
communication, non verbal, verbal, prejudices,
empathy, touch, acceptance, listening skills,
reflection, open ended questions, factors
that interfere with effective listening are
all discussed.

Continence
Management
This course covers the physiology of the urinary
system, looking at the problems that may arise
and the possible causes of urinary incontinence
as well as the signs and symptoms, assessment
and restoration of urinary continence. Promotion
of continence is covered together with management
of faecal incontinence. Continence products
and their use are discussed.

Holistic
Care
Looking at the whole person! This course covers
basic needs including physiological needs,
safety needs, acceptance needs, self-esteem
needs, cognitive needs, aesthetic needs, self-actualisation
needs, and cognitive needs. It discusses the
Maslow model, care delivery systems, and basic
rights of care, life story work, choice, and
confidentiality, person centred care, communication
and non-judgmental care. This is a new exciting
course with the aim of treating the person
as an individual.

Nutrition
and the Older Adult
This course looks at the changes in the body’s
digestive system with increasing age. It discusses
different diets including vegetarian diets
as well as religious dietary requirements.
The constituents of a healthy balanced diet
are discussed in detail as well as overcoming
problems with swallowing and poor appetite.

Stress
Awareness in the Workplace
This course is suitable for any care worker
looking to identify and rectify stress. The
course starts by looking at what is stress
and the physical, emotional and cognitive
signs of stress. It also discusses the stress
cycle, superhuman expectations, over work,
working relationships and home/work relationships.
It then goes onto looking at personal ways
of coping with stress.

Awareness Risks and Prevention
This brand new course looks at the risk factors
for falls and considers moving and handling
issues. It discusses physical causes of falls
and potential consequences of broken bones,
skeletal and joint problems. Osteoporosis
prevention and treatment is covered as well
as diet drugs and environmental hazards.

Self Harm
Why do people self-harm? This course discusses
self-harm, adult and childhood experiences,
which may underlie self-harm. It looks at
social factors and the facts and myths of
self-harm. What is the meaning of self-harm
and the approaches to dealing with self-harm?

Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing
This course covers law of torts, negligence,
duty of care, beaches of standards of care,
vicarious liability, principles of non-maleficence

ethical considerations of the terminally ill.
